  4. To safely use secure-FTP with Serv-U, using SSL/TLS to encrypt the FTP
  5. session and file tranfers, you *MUST* create your own certificate. To do
  6. this go to the 'Server | Settings | SSL Certificate' tab and fill in your
  7. own entries for the certificate presented there (you can get context
  8. sensitive help for this by pressing F1).
  9.  
  10. The reason for this has to do with the way SSL works. Associated with the
  11. certificate are two encryption keys named "private key" and "public key".
  12. To keep FTP traffic secret the private key has to be a secret. The default
  13. certificate that gets installed has the same keys for every installation
  14. and is thus no secret.

  17. THE SERV-U PROMO MESSAGE

  45. * Support for virtual paths. Directories or drives can be mapped to any
  46.   location in a user's directory structure.
  47. * Support for 'links' such as those used in UNIX.
  48. * Full support for all 'ls' directory listing options.
  49. * Support for messages to users, or from users to the server.
  50. * Users can be put into groups for easy maintenance of large numbers.
  51. * A complete implementation of the FTP standard in RFC959, RFC1123,
  52.   RFC1760, RFC2228, RFC2246, RFC2289, RFC2389 and the Secure-FTP draft.
  53. * Supports resuming of file uploads and downloads.
  54. * Configurable messages for sign-on, sign-off, login, and directory
  55.   changes.
  56. * Has time-out and time-limit features, so connections are automatically
  57.   cleared when idle, hung, or connected too long.

  59.   automated maintenance the settings are stored in an .INI file of simple
  60.   format.

  78. TRY-OUT

  81. Serv-U is trialware, which means you can try it before you decide to
  82. register. Feel free to pass the try-out version around, but please do not
  83. distribute any registration keys. The 30 day trial version is fully
  84. functional and identical to "Professional Edition". After the trial time
  85. has expired Serv-U automatically becomes a "Personal Edition" server.

  88. INSTALLATION/UPGRADING
  89. ======================

  91. Serv-U comes as a self-extracting installation executable. Follow the
  92. interactive setup and it will do the hard work for you. An uninstall
  93. program is also included which makes complete removal of all Serv-U files
  94. easy.

  96. To upgrade from a previous version the same installation program can be
  97. used. It will automatically look for and upgrade your existing installation
  98. of Serv-U. Of course, it never hurts to make a backup of your Serv-U
  99. directory before upgrading.

  102. NOTES FOR SYSTEM ADMINISTRATORS
  103. ===============================

  105. The self-extracting installation executable is a zip-file in itself which
  106. can be unpacked using any unzip utility. This lets one scan the contained
  107. executables for viruses if needed. Also, instead of the interactive setup
  108. Serv-U can be installed by simply copying the executables to their
  109. destination directory. No other system changes are needed. The online help
  110. file has more information relevant to system administrators, such as
  111. startup options and network installation.
